FAQ About Game Day

When are the games played?

Games are held Saturday mornings between 8 am and 5 pm. Players should arrive thirty minutes before the game for warm-ups and assignments. For game schedules by division and location of game, check the region’s website www.ayso341.org

What do I do if it's raining on game day?

Just because it’s wet outside, don't assume that the games will be canceled. Kids are waterproof and have been known to play soccer in the rain. On rainy days, the fields will be checked for playability and safety. If it is determined that we should stay off the field, you should receive a call from your Team Parent or Coach. Alternately, you may want to check the region’s website. If you don’t get a call from your Team Parent, Coach or don’t see any info on the home page, go to the field where your game is scheduled. If it is determined that the fields are OK to play on, then it becomes the individual Game Referee's decision to call off the game if conditions worsen.

Who sets up the goals on game day?

Goal set up is the responsibility of the parents of the teams that play the first game of the day.  Parents are encouraged to arrive early to set up goals so the game starts on time.

Who takes down the goals at the end of the game?

Goals are taken down by the parents of the team that play the last game of the day.  The goals will be bagged and left at the edge of he field for pick up..

A parent on the other side of the field was screaming at the players and upsetting the flow of the game.  What can I do?

Inform your coach and he will address your concern with the referee at the next available break.  The referee and only the referee will address the other coach and parent. If you have any other concerns, contact your coach or Division Representative within 24 hours. Positive, Instructional, and Encouraging is a philosophy that we want all to abide by when dealing with players. This means no negative comments towards a player when they make a mistake or fail to perform to your standards. Referees do have the authority to eject parents, coaches, or spectators who verbally abuse a player

I was watching a professional soccer match and saw them doing things that we are not allowed to do.  Are the rules the same?

The Laws of the Game (there are no "rules" in soccer) are the same for professional soccer as in most other leagues.  These Laws can be viewed online at FIFA Laws of the Game.  Youth soccer players are not as skilled or experienced as professional players.  Fouls awarded due to "plays in a dangerous manner" and "gains unfair advantage" have different interpretations between the two leagues.

AYSO has made a small number of modifications to the laws (as permitted by the laws) to meet the needs of a youth sports program.  The modifications are in the areas of field size and ball size for younger players, play time and substitutions.  In Santee AYSO, the younger divisions play a special short-sided game with very simplified laws.
